Enroll Now for Fall 2014

Fall 2014 classes start very soon, on Monday, August 18.  Many Landscape Horticulture classes have at least a few spots left.  And remember, if classes are underenrolled, college administrators will cancel them well in advance of the beginning of the semester.  So don’t delay…enroll now!

Following are some featured classes for fall, all of which have spots available and most of which apply to various certificates.

LANHT 003, Plant Materials: Ground Covers and Vines ID.  Wednesdays, 10 am – 4 pm, H-101. Instructor: Lawrence Lee.  Lec 44096, Lab 44097.  Join us for a class of outdoor exploration and discovery, where we will experience the diversity, beauty & challenges of plants in gardens and landscapes.  Comprising low growing shrubs, perennials, clumping plants, succulents, bamboos & grasses, ferns and even vines, groundcovers are one of the most overlooked elements of the landscape.  Not only are they important in weed control & erosion management, they also make up the canvas on which all else depends!  We will also study many vines far beyond the confines of ivy, vines that can bring an entirely new dimension to the garden and help create a sense of lush paradise, filled with fragrance & beauty.  Questions?  Contact the instructor:  Lawrence Lee, lelee@peralta.edu.

LANHT 004, Plant Materials: Shrubs ID.  Thursdays, 6:30 – 9:30 pm, H-101.  Instructor: Lawrence Lee.  Lec 44094.  Shrubs are among the most diverse and useful plants for landscape … for flowers, fruit, fragrance, color, texture and structure.   This class will explore the diversity of shrubs for the garden with an emphasis on low water, low maintenance plants with all season interest for the landscape.   Learn about more than 100 diverse shrubs for the landscape.  The focus of the course will be on improved garden selections & cultivars, which are available in the nursery trade.  For more information, contact the instructor:  Lawrence Lee, lelee@peralta.edu.

LANHT 009ABC, Sketch-Up Pro.  Tuesdays, 1 pm – 4 pm, Room L-131. Instructor: Susan Miller.  009A Lec: 42380, 009B Lec: 42381, 009C Lec: 42382.  Looking for a class that will greatly improve your design and visualization skills? SketchUp Pro will provide you with those skills and many more. SketchUp Pro is an amazing 3D computer modeling program used by many design professions and is rapidly becoming the leading 3D software, valued for both its 3D capabilities and its affordability. In this class you’ll learn how to model from hand sketches and plans, CAD files, terrain data, and photographs. You’ll also learn how to prepare real-time shadow studies which is invaluable for planting design. Come join us for an exciting semester!

LANHT 011, Plant Diseases and Their Control.  Wednesdays, 6:30 – 9:30 pm, H-108.  Instructor: Ann Northrup.  Lec: 42383.  An essential class for the horticulturist.  Identification and control of disease of landscape plants, both exotic and native.

LANHT 023, Plant Terminology.  Two sections:  Mondays 6:30 – 9:30 PM, H-108.  Instructor: Laura Forlin.  Lec 42389, and  Thursdays 1:00 – 3:30 PM.  Instructor: Lawrence Lee.  Lec 42388.  Another essential class for the horticulturist and required for any certificate.  Learn the botanical language used to describe plants in preparation for plant identification classes.

LANHT 025, Nursery Management.  Tuesdays, 1 pm – 4 pm, H-108. Instructor: Lawrence Lee.  Lec: 44101.  Management of retail and wholesale nurseries in relation to sales, marketing, operation, layout, and production.

LANHT 076, Edible Landscaping.  Fridays, 10 am – 4 pm, H-101. Instructor: Anders Vidstrand.  Lec: 44645, Lab: 44646.  Use of food-producing plants in the constructed landscape for homeowners, renters, school gardens, community gardens, senior centers, and micro-farms.

LANHT 206, Landscape Maintenance Business Practices.  Wednesdays, 6:30 – 9:30 pm, H-101. Instructor: Frank Niccoli.  Lec: 44104.  Business aspects. Bookkeeping, tax records, licenses, and legal matters.

LANHT 210ABC, Landscape Design Forum.  Tuesdays, 4:00 – 6:00 pm, H-101.  Instructors: Chris Grampp and Laura Forlin.  201A Lec: 42398, 201B Lec: 42399, 201C Lec: 42400.  Forum emphasizing professional practices in landscape design, including review of student designs for client presentation and guest speakers in the trade.
