Fall 2011 Plant Sale a Big Success

Thanks to Visitors, Volunteers, Contestants, Judges & Sponsors

Thanks go out to all the folks who came to our Fall Plant Fair and Sale — and to the San Francisco Chronicle and Sunset Magazine for featuring our event! The weather was fine, music was swinging, and many wonderful plants went to new homes. Proceeds from the sale support projects in the Horticulture Department that would otherwise go unfunded.

This year featured our first Harvest Basket Contest. Three judges, Tom Branca, former department chair, Bob Hornbeck, Instructor, and Theresa Halula, Department Alumna, ranked entries and awarded prizes in three categories: Seasonal Bounty, Garden Harvest Diversity, and Overall Beauty. The winners are below.

The first place prize for “Seasonal Bounty” went to Dorcas Moulton who received a hand built tool chest donated by Reliable Repair of Oakland. Her entry was presented in a hand woven plum branch basket and contained more than 20 varieties from her garden, including elderberries, herbs, apples and pears, and an heirloom crab apple she grafted onto her apple tree using a branch she brought home from Indiana.
