Volunteering around the Department

Many opportunities for greater breadth and depth in their horticultural education await students who are willing to volunteer their time and efforts in Department activities. Our semi-annual Plant Sales always need volunteers in dozens of capacities, from propagation to cashiering. Helping to maintain and improve our extensive grounds can teach students far more than their classroom experience alone. For more information about the many volunteer opportunities at the Department, please contact Molly Sealund at msealund@peralta.edu or 510-436-2491, or Anders Vidstrand at andersvidstrand@yahoo.com.

Urban Community Gardening

Our Urban Community Garden course allows students interested in community gardening to volunteer either on-site at the Merritt College campus or at the Lakeside Gardens on the shore of Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland. This is also a great place for those who are interested in starting their own community garden to talk to experienced gardeners about their successes and failures and to get some expert advice on urban food production! For more information, visit the Urban Community Gardening page.
