Landscape Horticulture Department, Merritt College, Oakland. Tuesdays 1:00 pm – 3:50 pm, 21 August – 11 December, 2012. 3 Units, course number: 43463. Instructor: Lawrence Lee

“It’s not just for people working in nurseries; anyone in horticulture will benefit from this class. You’ll take field trips to nurseries, talk about practical aspects of running a business, and cover key aspects related to growing healthy plants, all useful information regardless of your professional involvement and direction.” –Chris Grampp, Department Chair

This fall, LH25-Nursery Management will focus on sustainable practices for nurseries with an emphasis on small nurseries and micro-enterprises, both retail & wholesale.

The course will cover the practical aspects of growing crops for sale including: the basics of conventional & organic container media, propagation, fertilization, irrigation, sustainable pest & disease control, crop scheduling, nursery facilities & site analysis. We will also cover starting up and managing a nursery business including: organization, licenses, business plan, accounting, marketing & sales, government, and personnel.

In addition to lecture presentations, the course will provide the opportunity for hands-on nursery work in the Landscape Horticulture Department greenhouses & nursery and visits to small nurseries and micro-enterprises. Field trips will include tours & dialogue with nursery owners & managers on both the practical aspects of managing a nursery and the business & financial challenges of running a nursery and starting a new business.

Some of the nurseries which the class will visit include: Annie’s Annuals (specialty retail/wholesale nursery); Broadway Terrace Nursery, Oakland (small retail nursery); Watershed Nursery in Richmond (native restoration nursery), Westbrae Nursery (small retail nursery), Berkeley, Kassenhoff Growers, Oakland (micro-enterprise organic nursery), and a home back-yard nursery, among others.

LH25 is one of the required classes for the Intermediate Nursery Certificate & the Nursery Management Specialist Certificate offered by the Merritt College Landscape Horticulture Department. It is an excellent introduction to the nursery industry and would be valuable for anyone wishing to work in a nursery, establish a nursery, or someone who just wants to grow plants better in a sustainable, systematic way.
