Summer Field Sketching Class Available

Here’s a great summer class (fee-based) that will be an exceptional experience for anyone interested in developing free-hand drawing skills.  Last year’s inaugural class was a delight for all involved.

LANHT899: Landscape Sketching in the Field

  • Meets: Fridays, 10 am – 3:30 pm with half-hour lunch break; June 1 – July 8 (6 sessions).
  • First class meets in H105; remaining classes meet in the field.
  • Class Fee: $150
  • Instructor: Chris Grampp (Instructor in Landscape Architecture and Design, Merritt College)

Each week we’ll meet at a nearby Bay Area location to sketch the landscape. Our objectives will vary from class to class: line and tone, shade and shadow, quick layout strategies, gesture, drawing plants and landscape materials, and more. We’ll do a sketch each morning and review our work at lunch, and do another sketch and review in the afternoon. By the end of the course you will have done at least 12 landscape sketches, experimented with a variety of drawing techniques and approaches, had the opportunity to see your classmate’s work, and visited some interesting local places you might otherwise not have seen.  Everyone is welcome in this class regardless of experience (including beginners).

LANHT 899 will meet 6 times from June 1 – July 8, 10am – 3:30pm (includes 30 minutes for lunch). The first class is orientation and will meet on Wednesday June 1 in room H105 at the Landscape Horticulture Department, 12500 Campus Drive, Oakland CA. The remaining 5 classes will meet on Fridays in the field. The fee is $150. Pre-registration is available through the Landscape Horticulture Department office.  Call 510/436-2418 or email Maril Bull at mbull@peralta.edu.
